SIUH/NYSNA NP Negotiation Update – January 6, 2021
Yesterday, Staten Island University Hospital (SIUH) met virtually with the New York State Nurses Association (NYSNA) for our 13th negotiation session.
Once again, per diem usage was the substantive topic of the day. After some back and forth, we presented a thoughtful proposal balancing the union’s concerns regarding per diem overuse with the hospital’s need for flexibility to rely on per diems to cover unplanned absences and vacancies. This flexibility is essential to ensuring SIUH’s ability to deliver the highest quality patient care. Disappointingly, NYSNA showed little willingness to compromise, stifling any chances of progress. We are hopeful that NYSNA will make a more meaningful attempt to find middle ground at our next negotiation session on Jan. 22.
