SIUH/NYSNA NP Negotiation Update – October 19, 2020
This past Thursday, Staten Island University Hospital (SIUH) held its eighth negotiation session with the New York State Nurses Association (NYSNA). Disappointingly, very little progress was made in the bottlenecked bargaining.
As indicated in our last update, NYSNA almost exclusively refuses to custom tailor a contract suited to the specialized role NPs play in caring for patients. Instead, NYSNA insists on rigidly applying contract provisions intended for RNs. It is very difficult negotiating when the other side is largely unwilling to compromise. Even in instances where the union concedes that a particular provision does not apply to NPs, NYSNA spurns changes to the RN contract.
We still hold out hope NYSNA will reconsider our position at the next negotiation session on Oct. 30. In negotiations, a genuine give-and-take on both sides paves the way for the parties to find middle ground and advance toward attaining an appropriate contract befitting our NPs.
If you haven’t already done so, we encourage you to sign up for text message updates about the status of negotiations by texting SIUHNP to 77295. Text messages are factual, infrequent and brief, and contain a link to the full update residing on our website for SIUH NPs. You may also opt out at any time.
